The professional competitive dancers have been organized in Germany since 1948. At that time they were part of the German Dance Teachers Association ADTV (Allgemeiner Deutscher Tanzlehrer Verband). At the helm of this integrated organization called PTA (Professional Turnier Amt) at the time were;

Since 1991 the professional competitive dancers are organized in the DPV, which stands on its own and is a nonprofit organization overseeing the national professional competitive ballroom dance scene and also acts as a successful organizing group for international championships. Besides being active competitors, many of its individual members also work and act as coaches, trainers and licensed adjudicators for professional events.
Karl Breuer as President and Rudolf Trautz as his vice are leading the organization. Both names ring a bell since they two were successful ballroom competitors. Karl and Ursula Breuer were World Amateur Champions twice and Rudolf and Mechtild Trautz four (4) times World Professional Latin Champions and four times second in the World Professional Standard Championship. Also the other members of the executive committee have been successful competitors.
The DPV is the German member body in the World Dance Council (WDC) where Karl Breuer held the presidency for many years and is still honorary president (2012). Rudolf Trautz is currently vice president of this international professional organization of which Germany is a founding member.
The honor roll of German professional competitive dance is impressive and many couples have danced in international finals. World champions like Bryan Watson/Carmen Vincelj, Hans Reinhard Galke/Bianca Schreiber, Horst and Andrea Beer, Michael Hull/Patsy Hull-Krogull and Ralf Muller/Olga Muller-Omelchenko have made Germany one of the leading nations in competitive dance in the more recent past.
But also as an organizing body for major international dance competitions the DPV has become well-known. Since the restructuring in 1991, 28 European Championships and 34 World Championships have been organized successfully. In addition all the professional competitions at the German Open (GOC) were run by the DPV from 1987 until 2010. For more than 10 years the DPV was also the professional association within the German Amateur Association (Deutscher Tanzsport Verband DTV). Since 2010 this cooperation has been terminated; the amateur association found it necessary to form their own professional division and that status was unacceptable for the DPV.
