Cecil Reuben and Flora Le Breton
This is a real gem!
This video shows Cecil and Flora right after their victory in the Amateur World Championship 1922 which was the first World Championship held in London. Before they were held in Paris for many years, starting as early as 1909. Organizer was Camille de Rhynal choreographer, dancer, composer and patron of the arts. These early championships were held in Nice, France (see also Historical Notes in the book Ballroom Icons).
The note reads: “Darling Cecil’s World ChampionshipMedal 1922. I hope to found (sic) a prize to commemorate him each year)” Thank you Thomas Lopez for submitting the picture to us!
Flora le Breton (born 1898) was an English silent film actress from Croydon, Surrey, England
Wonderful! I came across a couple of similar medals recently – the same design, but in “silver” – awarded the same year, 1922, to the winners of the Amateur Waltz at the North Western Area regional final of the World Dancing Championships. I wrote up the story in one of my newsletters, at https://paulcmercer.com/miss-french-and-mr-bibby/ (if you’re interested)
Beautiful!
