The Difference between Footwork and Foot Usage

Here another take on Footwork vs Foot Usage by Loraine Barry

By Loraine Barry

Footwork … is found in your technique and it creates a platform to enable you to create correctness, balance and power.

Foot Usage … Become intimate with your feet. Feel the Toes – Balls of Feet- Heels – Inside and Outside Edges and the Flat foot.

Your feet must be soft

so to caress the floor, work on it and with it. Tension in your feet creates resistance to the floor and that resistance will travel through the whole body and cause stiffness.

Using your feet as in pushing and pulling the floor gives energy and power for movement. Over time your feet will become strong and they will allow you to dance with balance and control.

See your feet like artists see their paint brushes

Create designs in your feet first and allow those designs to travel through your whole body and fill the upper spaces. Everything starts in the feet … they are my tools of beauty.  Think about it … the soles of your feet are the only part of your body in contact with the floor .
