Who was Lucian David

Special Thanks go to Phillip Nicholas, Jose Sarabia and Rudolf Trautz for gathering and confirming the information!

Lucien and his wife Germaine from Lyon, France were held with high regard by their fellow professionals both in France and abroad; Lucien in particular for his vast knowledge and diplomacy. If you did not go to England for coaching Lyon in France was the place to go.

After a competitive career before and after WW II, he opened his small dance school at Place Gailleton in Lyon France in 1936, and later moved to 9 rue du Garet in Lyon an address known all over the dancing world. Many great champions from overseas like Rudolf Trautz, Karl Breuer etc. came to his school to have lessons from this great master, who was also an author of dance books and papers, a great technician and a man of great class. His knowledge was so vast; he was admired and sort after by dancers and teachers both from France and abroad.

Since Lucien had been a prisoner of war, he had a great command of the German language. He and his wife Germaine, also a excellent teacher, both held the highest qualifications at the time. They lectured and demonstrated at all the important dance congresses in France and abroad and were honorable life members in many dance societies like Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and many more.

Rudi Trautz:

“During my aprenticship to become a danceteacher I went to Lyon frequently for training!”

He was the editor of a monthly dance news letter with information mostly about the technique of the standard dances but he also wrote about the Latin American Dances. He loved to collaborate with other dance magazines and was invited many times to demonstrate on Television. Lucian introduced the Cha-Cha-Cha in Europe in the 1950’s. He organized the Olympaides de la Dance during the Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble in 1968 where Rudy Trautz danced a show.
